See One Model Transform Into a Braided Goddess at Mara Hoffman

Designer Mara Hoffman is known to send her models down the runway with epic braids, and this season's look for Fall 2015 totally blew us away. To complement her Star Wars meets boho '70s vibe clothing, Catwalk by TIGI US Creative Director Thomas Osborn created this whimsical four-braided look. It involves two milkmaid braids wrapped around the top, with loose pigtail braids falling down the back.

"Two to three day-old texture is what really makes it look the coolest," Osborn told us backstage. "As it starts to loosen up, touch it, and let those nuances come out. Embrace it. If you did a clean braid, and a hair pop out, don't panic or try to fit it back in. It's about keeping it loose, and then the braid comes to life."

Though the models at the show used hair extensions to add length in the back and plait attachments for the crown, we still got exclusive DIY steps so you can still try a style inspired by it at home. The following how to comes from hair pro Adriana Papaleo.

Step 1: Create texture by adding a product to your hair, such as TIGI Catwalk Bodifying Spray ($17), and then blasting it with hairspray. "This will build that grittiness and friction you need for the style," notes Papaleo.

Step 2: Separate your hair into a center part. "The softer it is, the more street-friendly it is," Papaleo explains. "The stronger the part, the more editorial it's going to feel."

Step 3: Separate two chunks of hair going from the top of your ear back around towards the center part. These will be your milkmaid braids, so plait each section into a simple three-strand look. "You could even fishtail it, if you really want to get fancy," adds Papaleo.

Step 4: Pin each braid around the top of your head.

Step 5: Divide the remaining loose hair into two sections and braid it going down from right behind your ear. Once the tail is secured with an elastic, gently tug on parts of the plait to loosen it. Pin the two long braids together in the center of each.
