Lobe Liner Is the New Way to Accessorize With Makeup

Move over, ear cuffs! Anthony Vaccarello's models hit the runway with glitter-encrusted earlobes. Allure spoke to makeup artist Tom Pecheux about the idea of using makeup as jewelry.

As the models walked down the runway at Anthony Vaccarello in Paris, their left ears sparkled under the lights. It's easy to assume they were all wearing oversized cuffs made by some cool Parisian jewelry designer, but makeup artist Tom Pecheux had in fact covered the bottom half of their ears with liquid liner and glitter. Which begs the question: has Pecheux invented a whole new type of body art?

"Anthony came up with the idea to create a piece of jewelry using makeup," explained Pecheux. "But putting it on the face looked very tribal." So Pecheux began thinking outside the box, or more accurately - going home and looking at his wall. "I own a picture by the artist Douglas Gordon that is of a person's finger tattooed entirely in black - like it was dipped in ink," he explained. "When Anthony was talking about jewelry and makeup, I thought perhaps we don't do an earring, but a black tattoo - something that felt very graphic, because the collection is graphic." So that's what Pecheux did. Armed with a liquid liner pen, he colored in the bottom half of the models' earlobes. Then, to make it look more luxurious and less aggressive, he covered the liner in a chunky, iridescent black glitter, using Homeoplasmine to get it to stick. Pecheux also played with glitter under the eyes. He brushed a finer black glitter along the lower lash line, spreading the flecks down slightly so that it looked a bit like morning-after makeup. "I love the look of leftover makeup," said Pecheux, "but doing it with glitter, rather than eyeliner, makes it feel chic rather than grungy."
